FOTOMETER PRO is a light meter for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch and iPad 2.


It is one of the best companions for your Hasselblad, Rolleiflex TLR, Nikon/ Canon SLR… or any old film cameras, Lomo toy cameras and even DIY pinhole cameras ! FOTOMETER PRO supports reflected and incident mode of measurement, so you can stand far and point towards the object of interest or place it right next to the object of interest for measurement. The meter covers ISO value from 25 to 6400 with ⅓ EV stepping, and it covers aperture value from 0.95 to 1000 – allowing you to measure exposure value for a huge aperture expensive lens down to a home made pinhole camera !!! After measuring the current luminance and adjusting the EV wheel to fine adjust light intensity for your object of interest – it is time to take the picture! step 2: set up your ISO speed and aperture value by turning the 2 rings.
step 3: set up the EV value if needed.
step 4: point the corresponding camera towards the object of interest.
step 5: wait for 2 to 3 seconds for the needle to get stabilized.
step 6: set the exposure knob to the same measured exposure value on your camera.
step 7: start taking picture. If the exposure value is bigger than 1 second, you can make use of the countdown timer to help you keep track of the time remains. * due to the machine’s limitation, you are advised not to measure the exposure values under extreme conditions, that is, point towards the noon’s sunlight directly or in complete darkness. EXPOSURE  METER                                COUNTDOWN TIMER 1 – Preview window : a tiny glassy window allowing you to locate the view you are currently pointing at from the front or rear camera. 2 – Set button : it leads you to the meter’s setting page where you can set sound and vibration on/off, you can also access the user manual there inside the application. 3 – ISO speed ring : you can turn this ring around to set the ISO speed of the film that you are currently using. It covers ISO value from 25 to 6400 with ⅓ EV stepping in between. 4 – Aperture ring : you can turn this ring around to set the aperture of the lens you are currently using. It covers Aperture value from 0.95 to 1000. For Aperture values 150, 500 and 1000 are typically for large-pinhole, regular-pinhole and small-pinhole respectively. 5 – EV turning knob : under different lighting conditions, you might want to increase or decrease the exposure time. this EV knob is here to serve this purpose. For example, when your object of interest is located at the back-light position and you want to get enough details of the object, you will be adjusting the EV knob to +2.0 which increases the exposure time by 2 steps. It supports +2.0 to -2.0 exposure level change. 6 – Measurement mode button : it switches the mode of measurement between reflected or incident mode. If reflected mode is chosen, you will be using the rear camera of iPhone to point to the object of interest. please refer to figure 1.

figure 2. the incident measurement mode 7 –  Timer button : it captures the current reading that you have just measured and leads you to the other side of the application – the Countdown Timer. You can use the timer to help you counting down when you are shooting. This feature is especially useful for pinhole photographers. Timer button is only activated when the exposure time is more than 1 second. 8 – Exposure time : it is an output panel of exposure time that you will need to set on your beloved camera. 9 – Exposure time : it is the exposure time measured from the exposure meter. It will not change its value until you go back to the meter section. 10 – Countdown timer needle : it is the needle indicating how much time is left that you need to close the shutter. When the needle completes a circle, time is up, and shutter should be closed. you can set sound / vibration to on / off as notification for yourself. 11 – Return button : it leads you back to the meter section for a different scene’s exposure metering. 12 – Start / Stop button : it starts or stops the timer countdown. When the moving timer is stopped, the needle will be reset. 13 – Readings panel : the luminance, ISO speed and aperture values from the meter section is listed here for your easy reference when shooting and counting down.
